Fried apples are something I find myself making whenever I have a surplus of apples. Here in Pennsylvania, we have beautiful orchards with a variety of fruits including apples, cherries and peaches. Not far from our house is an orchard with rows and rows of fruit trees as far as the eye can see. My children and I enjoy picking cherries from the orchard during the summer, then in the fall you can pick your own apples or fill up bags of apples from big wooden crates at the store front.
Fried apples are a great addition to waffles, pancakes, baked oatmeal and pumpkin bread. They are also delicious on their own or as a dessert topping for cheesecakes, apple cake and much more!

Ingredients needed for fried apples: Apples, ground cinnamon, butter and brown sugar.
Salted or unsalted butter?
I use salted butter in everything, simply because it adds flavor. While I recommend salted butter for this recipe, you can also use unsalted butter if needed.

Step 1: Remove the cores and stems from the apples, then peel and cube into bite sized pieces. Place the apples into a medium sized mixing bowl and toss with brown sugar and cinnamon until evenly coated.

Step 2: Melt butter in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the apples and fry for 10-15 minutes until softened to your preference. Stir frequently to avoid burning. Allow to cool, then serve or use in baked goods, pancakes and more.
Note on frying the apples if using in pancakes or baked goods:
If you plan to cook the apples again by adding them to baked goods or pancakes, I recommend only frying them until crisp tender because they will continue to soften when cooked or baked in another dish.
To bake the apples instead of frying:
Toss the apples with cinnamon, brown sugar and melted butter. Place the apples into a 9 inch baking dish, then bake at 375 degrees for 15-20 minutes until softened to your preference.

Adding this “out of focus” photo to the blog post simply because it is cute and evidence that my kids scraped the skillet clean at snack time this morning. 🙂 I added less sugar for my kid’s snack, and they still scarfed them down. If needed, you can reduce the sugar or add more to preference. If I am adding these apples to a baked good that is already sweetened, I generally add less sugar but if using the apples as a dessert topping or stand-alone treat you may wish to add more.
