Easy Orange Lemonade

Combining fresh oranges with lemons to make lemonade is not only easy but super refreshing! We like to make this iced lemonade while California oranges are in season, but you can make it all year long with oranges from the supermarket. If you wish to make this drink healthier, you could replace the sugar with honey or a natural sweetener like Agave or stevia. It makes a great afternoon pick-me-up any time of the year!

Ingredients needed: water, oranges, sugar, lemons and ice. Yes, it’s that simple!

Step 1: Whisk water and sugar together in a small saucepan on the stovetop. Heat just until the water is warm enough to dissolve the sugar, then remove from heat and allow to cool.

Is it necessary to heat the water?

Sugar does not dissolve well into cold water, which is why I recommend making a syrup with the sugar and water before adding it to the orange lemonade. Heating the water while stirring in the sugar simply ensures you are not left with sugar at the bottom of the pitcher of lemonade once ready to serve.

Step 2: Juice lemons and oranges using the citrus juicer of your choice. You can juice the citrus by hand, but it is a little more difficult. Strain the juice through a mesh strainer or cheesecloth to remove any remaining pulp.

Final step: Combine the orange lemonade concentrate with ice and water to taste in a half gallon or gallon sized pitcher. You can add as much or as little as desired to get the flavor you prefer. You can also add sparkling water to the concentrate for a fun twist. Serve and enjoy!

Storage:

This lemonade keeps well in the refrigerator for several days, but if you wish to make it ahead of time for an event, I suggest refrigerating or freezing only the concentrate to keep the ice from diluting it too much as it melts.
