Amish Peanut Butter Cream Cheese Frosting

Someone recently said that adding peanut butter to cream cheese frosting ruins the frosting, but I doubt they ever tried it because this recipe, which uses peanut butter and cream cheese to make a deliciously creamy frosting, is definitely one of our favorites and has been a favorite of my Amish family’s for a long time! We love this creamy peanut butter frosting on chocolate cupcakes or on my family’s favorite moist chocolate cake. I can’t wait to try it out on our Amish chocolate whoopie pies recipe next! This recipe makes enough frosting to cover a 13 by 9 inch cake, or enough for 24 cupcakes.

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl (linked below)
  • Handheld mixer (linked below)
  • Spatula (linked below)
  • Stainless steel measuring cups and spoons (linked below)

Ingredients

  • 8 oz. cream cheese frosting softened
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter *see note
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup whole milk *see note
  • 4 cups confectioner's sugar sifted.

Instructions

  • Using a handheld mixer, combine the cream cheese, peanut butter and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth or mostly lump free.
  • Add milk and confectioner's sugar alternately until the frosting has a thick, pipeable consistency (you may need more or less milk and confectioner's sugar). Use a spatula to scrape down the peanut butter and cream cheese bits on the sides as needed.
  • Use the frosting for cupcakes, whoopie pies, cakes and more! Keep refrigerated (see more storage notes below).

Notes

All of the ingredients can more or less be added to taste. I like to use a heaping half cup of peanut butter, but you can also add more like 3-4 tablespoons if you prefer a more subtle peanut butter flavor.
Add just enough milk and confectioner’s sugar to get a thick, pipeable consistency (more notes on this below).

Ingredients needed for this Peanut Butter Frosting: peanut butter, confectioner’s sugar, milk, vanilla extract and cream cheese.

Step 1: Using a handheld mixer, combine the cream cheese, peanut butter and vanilla extract, mixing until smooth or mostly lump free.

Step 2: Add milk and confectioner’s sugar alternately until the frosting has a thick, pipeable consistency (you may need more or less milk and confectioner’s sugar). Use a spatula to scrape down the peanut butter and cream cheese bits on the sides as needed.

Note on adding milk and confectioner’s sugar:

I usually use 1/4 cup milk, plus maybe a tablespoon more (if needed) and the full four cups of confectioner’s sugar. Too much sugar will make the frosting too sweet, so be sure to add to taste as well.

Dairy Substitutes:

You could use a dairy free cream cheese for this frosting. Almond, or Soy milk would be good milk alternatives. One of my favorite substitutes for whole milk in baking is to use oat milk because it has a more neutral flavor. If you plan to use alternatives, the textures may be different than shown in the photo and you may need to tweak the amounts of the ingredients to get the consistency to your preference.

Step 3: Use the peanut butter frosting for cupcakes, whoopie pies, cakes and more!

Storage notes:

This peanut butter frosting should stay refrigerated because of the cream cheese frosting. The good news is that it lasts for a long time in the refrigerator. If you are planning to make the frosting ahead of time for an event, I would suggest using it within the first week so that it tastes fresher. I have not tried freezing this frosting but know that a lot of people do freeze frostings. If freezing, just be sure to allow it to come back to room temperature, then you may need to mix it a little bit again in case of separation.
