Patriotic Skewers with 3 variations!

Patriotic skewers and foods are fun to make for Memorial Day, Fourth of July and more! I think it is special to take some time to remember what the United States of America have been through and to remember the fallen heroes who have sacrificed so much for our freedom.

Below are three fun ideas for patriotic skewers. You can add your own ideas along with mine to come up with your own fun and memorable patriotic themed treats.

  1. American Flag Skewer

Ingredients used:

12 blackberries, 1-16 oz. box of strawberries and 4 bananas.

Equipment used: Cutting board, shish kebab skewers, paring knife, parchment paper and baking sheet.

How to Guide and Tips:

Cut strawberries and bananas into slices, keeping them somewhat uniform in size. You can also chunk the strawberries if it is easier. Take four skewers and layer on 3 strawberry slices and 3 banana slices onto each skewer. To keep the bananas fresh for a little longer, you can try spritzing on some lemon juice diluted with water. Top the strawberries and bananas with 3 large blackberries. For the remaining skewers: layer on 7 strawberry slices and 6 bananas making a total of 13 stripes starting with red and ending with red. Fun fact: The 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies.

Tips: I prefer to use 8-inch skewers for this project, simply because it is easier to slide fruit onto thinner skewers.

Getting the stripes straight can be a little challenging. I recommend cutting the strawberries and bananas as uniformly as possible to achieve nice stripes. You can also use a ruler or a piece of parchment paper with lines drawn onto it if you want to get really technical. The skewers will get eaten up in a jiffy anyway, so no sweat if it isn’t perfect!

2. Red, White and Blue Savory Skewers:

Ingredients used:

Blackberries, one package mozzarella balls and Pastrami stars.

Can also use: Blueberries, blue grapes, white cheddar cut into cubes (or any white cheese that can be cubed), pepperoni, salami, chorizo, etc.

Equipment Used:

Skewers, star shaped cookie cutter, scissors and parchment paper.

How to guide and tips:

Layer the white cheese and blue fruit onto 10-inch skewers. I started with a blackberry on the bottom, 3 mozzarella balls between and repeated this process 3 times ending with a blackberry at the top. Using a total of 9 mozzarella balls and 4 blackberries per skewer. Cut the red meat of your choice (should be sliced around 1/4 inch thick) with a small star shaped cookie cutter. Place the star at the top of the skewer that has been filled with fruit and cheese until about an inch or two from the top.

Tips: Honestly, these were the easiest skewers that I did. I did use a scissors to finish cutting the stars out of the slice of pastrami because my cookie cutter wasn’t quite sharp enough to cut all the way through the pastrami. Using pepperoni may be easier. If you can find red sandwich meats at your local deli, ask them to cut the meat into a slice about 1/4 inch thick for cutting it out with the star shaped cookie cutter.

3. Red, White and Blue Sweet Skewers:

Ingredients Used:

Blueberries, Sliced Strawberries and Mini Marshmallows.

Equipment needed:

Cutting board, paring knife (or chef’s knife) and skewers.

How to guide and tips:

Layer the red, white and blue however you think looks best! I think my kids loved these the most.

Tips: I did make the mistake of using 12-inch skewers for this photo (as you can see the blueberries cracked a bit). Go for 8-inch skewers if using blueberries.

If you are having trouble with the marshmallows, try sliding on a strawberry or blueberry first. The juice from the fruit will moisten the wood on the skewers and create less friction for the marshmallows to slide down into position.

If you try these skewers, I would love to see a photo! Tag me on Instagram to show off a photo of your own recipe creation.
