Easy Homemade Sausage Gravy

Sausage gravy and biscuits are one of my favorite breakfast or breakfast for dinner dishes. This simple sausage gravy is nice and creamy and is easy to make too! You can use this gravy to top buttermilk biscuits, or even use it as a topping along with syrup for pancakes and waffles. One of my favorite childhood memories is of waking up in my Amish grandmother’s house and enjoying a stack of bunny shaped pancakes smothered in homemade sausage gravy and syrup. Which is probably why it is still one of my favorite breakfast dishes today!

Notes

The amount of milk added can be adjusted to your preference. You may need to add more or less than written in the recipe.
Salt and pepper can also be added to taste. My family prefers the gravy to be mild with black pepper, but feel free to adjust to your preference.

Ingredients needed for this easy sausage gravy: all purpose flour, whole milk, butter, ground sausage, salt and pepper.

Step 1: Brown the ground sausage, breaking it up into small bits. Once the sausage is cooked through, drain off the excess grease and stir in the flour.

Step 2: Add milk and seasonings, then bring the gravy to a simmer while stirring constantly. Cook for several minutes to eliminate the flour taste, then remove from the heat and stir in the butter.

Stir, stir, stir!

Because the base of this sausage gravy is made with milk, it can burn easily if left alone while cooking. Be sure to stir the sausage gravy frequently, if not constantly, and cook the gravy over a medium-low heat after bringing it to a simmer.

Step 3: Allow the gravy to cool slightly, then serve over buttermilk biscuits, pancakes, waffles or toast and enjoy!

Storage options for this easy homemade sausage gravy:

Sausage gravy freezes well and can be kept in the freezer in an airtight container for several months. If freezing the sausage gravy, be sure to allow it to cool completely first. To reheat, simply place the gravy into a saucepan and bring it to a simmer. Leftover sausage gravy can also be refrigerated for 3-5 days before reheating. I love having extra sausage gravy in the fridge for a quick breakfast of sausage gravy and toast with a fried or scrambled egg.
